Swimming Classes and Pools in Exeter
The Exeter Baby Activities listing page for Swimming Classes and Pools in Exeter with details of swim schools and leisure centres.
Why Baby Swimming? Because it’s educational, potentially life-saving and great fun!
It promotes bonding; the skin-to-skin contact and total reliance your baby has on you in the pool is great for bonding. With mums generally getting more opportunities for baby activities, daddies find swimming a great way to connect with their babies.
It’s a great for physical and mental development; swimming is one of the few activities babies can do from birth. Despite looking gentle, swimming provides a complete physical workout, strengthening the heart, lungs and respiratory system which, in turn, aids development of the brain. What’s more, regular swimming can enhance babies’ eating and sleeping patterns – a definite bonus for parents! With a 30-minute session burning up to 300 calories, parents get a good workout too.
It teaches water safety; babies who swim on a regular basis develop a respect for water and can be taught potentially lifesaving skills. Learning to get to the side, hold on, get out and/or swim can save children’s lives.
Choosing a swim school
Teaching babies to swim is a skilled profession, requiring in-depth knowledge. However, there is fairly limited regulation, so here are some things to consider:
- Training; check the qualifications and experience of the teachers and don’t be afraid to ask questions!
- Insurance; check that the swim school is fully insured. They should be happy to show you a copy of their current Public Liability insurance certificate.
- Structure; some classes simply get your child used to the pool, whilst others are more structured, with a distinct course progression designed with key milestones.
- Fun! Baby swimming is a relaxing and enjoyable activity, perfectly designed to enhance the parent/child bond. The emphasis should always be on you feeling like you’re evolving at your child’s own pace and on both of you having fun.
Swimming Schools in Exeter
Our Turtle Tots classes are specialist, progressive Baby and Toddler swimming classes. We use singing, toys and games to teach children water confidence, vital life saving skills and to have fun! The classes are wonderful bonding time for you and your baby (a precious, uninterrupted 30 minutes together) and swimming from a young age offers a huge number of both physical and psychological benefits for children. Our programme has the added benefit of giving you a toning workout where you could burn up to 250Kcal per class and has been endorsed by Professor Greg Whyte, who has a specialist interest in postnatal fitness. A percentage of all our class fees is donated to the Exeter based Child Bereavement charity Balloons.
We teach little ones aged from birth to 3 years in pools in and around Exeter.
