Reading to babies is a pleasure. For a while, they only listen to the sound of your voice. Then their eyes start noticing the patterns and the colours on the pager. Their little fingers play with the cardboard or fabric pages. Before your know they recognise the sound, the rhythm of language and express a preference. Many children will love hearing their favourite story read over and over until they know it by heart. They are all available in hardback making them more durable.
When they learn to read, it is time to take the baby books out again. Their simplicity allows their to practice their newly acquired reading skills.
Here are some of our favourite baby books:
Hello Lion has cheerful drawings and musical, simple text. Babies will enjoy the little ribbons coming out of the book to turn the pages and imitate the lion’s mane. Shhhtt, Leo is sleeping.
The Very Hungry Caterpillar probably doesn’t need an introduction. The little caterpillar munches (or tries to!) through various fruit and vegetable before turning into a cocoon and a beautiful butterfly. A lovely book when you’re weaning your baby to introduce food vocabulary.
Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? has a similar style of artistic illustrations. Cute little story playing with colours, animals and children.
Dear Zoo: Lift the Flaps is an absolute favourite in our house. A little boy writes to the zoo to send him a pet but the camel is too grumpy, the snake is too scary… The story is incredibly cute and well written. The little flaps are a hit with the kids.
Goodnight Moon (pictured) The sweetest bedtime story ever! We read this as the last bed time story of the evening. We love the simple images which leaves room to imagination – alternating colour and black and white drawing. The children enjoy the rhythmic stance of the poetry. A classic!
